Obituary for Jim Furber

JIM FURBER 2/1/1949 – 9/10/2026

Jim Furber passed away September 10, 2026 at his home in Jeffersonville, Indiana.  He was born February 1, 1949 in Boston, Massachusetts to Lawrence and Sarah Furber.  Jim never met a stranger and had a big heart for the underdog.  Jim was a man of deep faith, deep compassion, and one who always brought great joy to those who knew him.

He served our country with great honor during the Vietnam war from 1969 through 1970.   He served as a Sargeant in the Army 5th Special Forces as an investigator and interrogator.  He was a Vietnamese language specialist and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service in 1970.  For the remainder of his years Jim championed any cause that would support our military and was a great patriot for our great nation.

Jim was a man of many talents and interests.  He owned a seafood restaurant (J & B’s) in Milford, Massachusetts for ten years (1978-1988).

Another area of great interest is baseball.  Baseball was one of his great passions.  He started coaching youth baseball in Massachusetts.  He coached from 1971-1988.  Because of his natural leadership skills he served as the President of the Tri-Valley League 1983-1988.

Jim started a new chapter of his life when he moved his family from his hometown in  Milford, Massachusetts to Daytona Beach Shores, Florida in 1988.  This move introduced Jim to many new opportunities.  He quickly took to racing and loved NASCAR.  He would take a week off every year just to go to Daytona Beach Festivities to be part of the Daytona 500 season.  He loved it.  In Florida, Jim also carried on with Baseball too.  This time he moved up to the big leagues.  He took on the roll of a Major League Baseball scout 1993-2003 and rose to the become President of the East Coast Scout team 1994-2003.  Jim was also awarded with the Florida Diamond Club Man of the Year Award in 1999.  It wasn’t uncommon that in more recent years he would be caught out in the garage listening to a game into the late hours of the night.  Jim often excelled and always offered his best.  This is because he loved people.  Jim was a natural conversationalists and could make anyone feel instantly welcome.

Without knowing it Jim met the love of his life in 1993 when Theresa applied for a position at the accounting Department at the Inlet Condominium in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.  Jim was running the accounting department at the time.  She was hired nearly right away.  Two years later in 1995 Jim went to work for the Dial family as a comptroller for their company.  Working together for the Dials they built and managed hotels and many businesses.   So, for a time Jim and Theresa didn’t see each other.  However, in 2001 they got reacquainted and this time with a twinkle in his eyes for Theresa and she for him.  In 2002 they got married and with their little Jack Russell, Pidi, they traveled to Cape Cod for their honeymoon.  And they lived happily in Port Orange, Florida.

In 2004 the Dials invited Jim to move to Clarksville, Indiana.  Theresa followed a year later where they moved into their home in Jeffersonville.

It was shortly thereafter that they found their way to Grace Lutheran Church where once again many came to know the charm, wit, and joy that Jim brought with him.  Jim stepped up to help with the March 2 Recovery effort to help tornado survivors.  He led the recovery teams and Grace.  As a natural leader he took on many projects together with the Lutheran Early Response Teams who worked to restore homes and to rebuild lives affected by the Henryville Tornado.  He received the Giants in the Faith Award in 2012 for his work in Henryville and for his passionate work, around that same time, to send care packages to our troops at FOB Fenty in Afghanistan.

Jim preceded into eternal life by his parents, Lawrence and Sarah Furber and by his brother, Richard Furber and his sister, Linda Furber.  He is survived by his Wife, Theresa.  He is also survived by his Daughter Julie (Chris) Glennon and his Son, Brian Furber; his siblings Larry (Brenda) Furber, Christopher Long, Kathy Long, and JP Long, His brothers-in-law, John Petteys, and Jim (Lorri) Petteys, sister-in-law, MaryAnne (Fred) Facompre, his Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
