OBITUARY
Rica Lee Kanzinger

JULY 14, 1949 – SEPTEMBER 14, 2022

Rica Lee Kanzinger, age 73, of Floyds Knobs, Indiana, passed away unexpectedly the morning of September 14, 2022. Rica was born in Louisville, Kentucky to Norma Lee Beasey and Kenneth Allen Whittaker on July 14, 1949. She graduated from Shelbyville High School (Class of 1967), and recently celebrated her 55th high school reunion. After graduating from Western Kentucky University, Rica married Robert Kanzinger, and they had two children, Ross Kanzinger (Carmel, Indiana) and Robin Ballard (Floyds Knobs, Indiana). She worked for Louisville Manufacturing Company for over 25 years as an accountant, followed by over 20 years at AST Industrial as their accounting manager and controller. Rica’s most fulfilling job, however, was being a mother to Ross and Robin and a doting “Granny” to her 6 grandchildren, Ethan (9), Lainey (7), Kaylee(7), Eli (5), Cole (2) and Ruth (1). After nearly a decade of “strong encouragement” from her family and friends, Rica finally retired in 2020. She spent the last two years attending concerts and events with her companion David Fellows and enjoying her grandchildren. She loved being outside and gardening, the beach, and was a Purdue Boilermaker at heart thanks to her children. She enjoyed going out for ice cream, eating lemons (peel and all!), spoiling her grandchildren with endless treats, and decorating for holidays and other family celebrations. Most of all, she loved being with people. Rica had an uncanny ability to find connections with strangers and had a knack for remembering names and important details about people…she never met a stranger. She will be remembered for her selfless nature (sometimes to her own detriment) and always, always putting her family first.

Rica was preceded in death by Kenneth “Kenny” (Mary) Whittaker and Dewey Beasey.

She is survived by her mother, Norma “Nana” Beasey; children, Ross Kanzinger (Courtney) and Robin Ballard (Lance); grandchildren, Ethan (9), Lainey (7), Kaylee(7), Eli (5), Cole (2) and Ruth (1); as well as siblings, Charlene (Steve) Shade, Mark (Lynn) Whittaker, Jon (Sarah) Beasey, Matthew (Kris) Beasey and Bill Beasey, plus numerous nieces and nephews, and great nieces and great nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider making a donation to A Place to Sleep (https://www.aplacetosleepministry.org), a nonprofit founded by her great niece Jessica Collins that has been providing beds and bedding to children in need in the Kentuckiana area for over a decade.

Visitation for Rica will be held Sunday, September 18, 2022 from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Kraft Funeral Service, 708 East Spring Street, New Albany, Indiana 47150.

A funeral service to celebrate her life will be Monday, September 19, 2022 at 10:00 AM, at the funeral home with burial to follow in Evergreen Cemetery.

OBITUARY
Shirley Mae Buehner

July 11, 1933 — April 27, 2022

Buehner, Shirley Mae (Biller), 88, Sellersburg, went to be with the Lord on April 27, 2022

Shirley was born July 11, 1933 in St Louis, Mo to the late Frederick and Ella (Fasholz) Biller. She graduated in 1951 from Lutheran High School in St Louis and worked as a secretary until she was united in marriage to the late Rev. Theodore W. Buehner on June 4, 1955. Shirley took on the role of a supportive pastor’s wife, sharing her faith and love for the Lord by making people feel welcomed and loved with an unforgettable smile and very contagious laugh. She enjoyed singing in the choirs of all 6 congregations (in 4 states) that they joyfully served, ending up in New Albany and Jeffersonville in the early 1960’s.

Shirley was a homemaker for 16 years before joining the workforce for the NA-FC Public School System in the Admin building. In 1974 she transferred to IUS, first working in the Jeffersonville Library campus and then transferring to the present campus location in New Albany. She served over 27 years for IUS, as library secretary, then Audio Visual Secretary, but most notably as a Financial Aid, Work/Study Coordinator, helping 100’s of students navigate the costs of tuition.

Post retirement and missing “people interaction” Shirley began her career as a McDonald’s Hostess for her family’s local franchises. She was able to share that beautiful smile to all that walked thru the doors. Many, including the regular mailman, would come in specifically to see and eat with her . (Occasionally a few tables got cleaned in between conversations with treasured friends). She became known as the “Bingo Mama” when she started calling a weekly Senior Bingo hour at the restaurants, sometimes standing room only.

Always the competitor, Shirley loved playing corn hole, card games, and filling out brackets for March Madness. Growing up in St Louis, she loved the “3B’s” …. Beer, Cardinal Baseball, and backyard family BBQ’s, a tradition that continued every time our family returned to visit. A fourth “B”, Hoosier Basketball, quickly captured her heart once moving to Indiana.

Shirley never complained as health issues mounted. Her strong faith and belief that God would take care of her, enabled her to meet these challenges “head on”. For this we all admired and learned from.

Shirley is survived by her identical twin sister, Betty Milhouse; daughters Pamela (Perry) Krause and Stephanie (Cary) Donovan; son, Timothy (Marcia) Buehner; Grandchildren, Brittney (Larry) Barnett, Tiffany (Bryan) Meyer, Brooke (Kevin) Smith, Grant (Savanna) Donovan, Royce Donovan, Sloane Donovan, Katherine Buehner, Tobias Buehner, Nathaniel Buehner; and 7 beautiful great-grandchildren

Visitation will be Monday, May 2nd at Grace Lutheran Church, Klerner Lane, New Albany 10-1, with service at 1 and burial to follow at Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park in New Albany.

Memorial contributions in Shirley’s memory may be made to Concordia Lutheran Church (1127 E. Broadway, Louisville, KY 40204 or to the Ronald McDonald House (550 S. 1st Street, Louisville, KY40202. To leave a special message for the family, please visit www.NewcomerKentuckiana.com

OBITUARY
Norman K. Curts

January 16, 1922 – March 14, 2022

Norman K. Curts, 100, passed away on Monday, January 13th, 2022 at Baptist Health Floyd. Norman was born on Blue River in White Cloud, Indiana, January 16, 1922. He was the son of the late Straud and Ruth Curts. Norman enlisted in the Army during World War II where he served as a Sargent in the Signal Corps under General Patton. Norman heroically fought in the Battle of the Bulge, was on the USS Queen Mary and spent his 21st Birthday in Belgium. He was a very proud Veteran and was a member of the VFW Hobart Beach Post 1693.

After the service Norman moved to Chicago to attend school for Television and Radio Technology. He then took a job for Zenith where he worked on developing the first colored TV. This is where he met Helen and they were married shortly after. They then built a family raising 3 daughters.

Norman’s future plans came to fruition when he moved back to Southern Indiana to start his own business, Curts TV Sales and Service in New Albany, where he remained in business for over 30 years.

In the late 50’s he and his brother James raced a 5-liter Hydroplane named the “Black Widow”. They were members of the American Power Boat Association and competed in the National Hydroplane Race Circuit. Norman retired from racing but then helped to build the next 7-liter Black Widow that his brother James would race.

Norman was very mechanically inclined. He was the go-to for many tough situations such as moving, fixing or building things. He built cabinets and clocks, bricked the outside of their home and built his own log splitter. Norman even built an addition to their houseboat, the “Lazy Laker” where he enjoyed many summers with family and friends for years. Even into his 90’s you would catch Norman still making things such as his work shed and even a Pergola over his fish pond.

Left to cherish Norman’s memory are his loving wife of 75 years, Helen; daughters, Carin Hornung (Larry), Rita Stumler (Chuck) and Patricia Curts; four granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews as well as many good friends. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his nine siblings.
